Every week I provide an update about my activities as a Member of Parliament both in Westminster and across the constituency, so that residents in Farnham, Bordon, Haslemere, Liphook and our surrounding villages can see my work in representing their interests.
Plans to give mayors the power to impose an uncapped tax on overnight stays, including hotels, B&Bs and other accommodation have been confirmed this week, meaning higher costs simply for choosing to holiday in Britain. The industry has warned that a levy will also cost thousands of jobs.
Parliament is back, and it has certainly been an eventful start. Sir Keir Starmer has announced one final U-turn as he changes his mind and stands down as an MP, while fresh questions have been raised about Reform UK’s funding following yesterday’s news report on Channel 4.
Parliament is now in recess, which means my time is going to be spent around the constituency until September. There’s lots to do and I’m looking forward to it, and I hope to see many of you at various events over coming weeks.
Before anything else, I want to express my sincere condolences following the death of Ann Widdecombe. The circumstances surrounding her death are deeply shocking, and I know many will be following the police investigation closely.
After months of political turmoil, Sir Keir Starmer has finally resigned as Prime Minister. His successor, Andy Burnham, returns to Westminster as the new MP for Makerfield and likely Labour leader, marking a significant moment in British politics.This week also marks Armed Forces Week.
I’ve no doubt that the early hours of this morning quietly marked one of the most significant political events of this Parliament - though whatever the outcome of the impending challenge for No. 10, nothing will solve the fundamental problem that it is Labour at the helm.
As I wrote in the Farnham Herald this week, our area truly shines in weeks like these, and I hope you and your family have had the opportunity to make use of some of the beautiful countryside in our part of Surrey and Hampshire.
