In a debate on Iran in the House of Commons today, Farnham and Bordon MP Gregory Stafford argued that the United Kingdom must distinguish between the people of Iran and the regime that has governed the country since the 1979 revolution. While recognising Iran's rich history, culture and contribution to the world, he contended that the current leadership has prioritised ideological ambition over the wellbeing of its own citizens, suppressing freedoms at home while fuelling instability abroad. In his view, the courage of ordinary Iranians seeking greater liberty deserves the support of the international community.
Gregory set out the case that the Iranian regime represents a direct threat not only across the Middle East but also to Britain's own national security. He highlights Iran's backing of proxy organisations, its hostile activities beyond its borders, and the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in undermining regional stability. He argued that diplomacy remains important when backed by strength, robust enforcement and meaningful consequences for hostile behaviour.
Looking ahead, Gregory called for decisive action to ensure that recent measures against the IRGC are fully implemented and effectively enforced. He believes the UK should take a leading role in working with international allies to counter Iran's destabilising activities, prevent the development of nuclear weapons, and protect British interests through clear, resolute leadership.
