Gregory hosted a debate this week on UK-China relations where he raised many concerns alongside broader issues of human rights for Uyghurs, Tibetans, and Hong Kongers – many of whom have fled to the UK to escape a regime that denies their nationality and seeks to subsume them as “mainland Chinese.”
He also drew attention to the case of Jimmy Lai, the former owner of pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily in Hong Kong. Lai, a British citizen, has been in solitary confinement for around 1,700 days, with inadequate medical care despite suffering from diabetes and a heart condition. Gregory has been working closely with Lai’s son, Sebastien, to raise awareness of his situation and to advocate for urgent medical attention. He has criticised the Labour Government for its failure to meaningfully advocate on Lai’s behalf.
